What a great email to receive! I know you are making a huge contribution and will get lots of good advice and help from Jerry. He is really THE BEST and you both make a dynamite pair. Went to the doc and it's bronchitis so am on a powerful wonder drug and taking it easy. Isn't the TOP2008 a great activity? The 309ers are getting some good looks at development theory in action, and theory to practice is what it's all about. You may find that day in and day out teaching isn't always this exciting but it's times like these that helps build a relationahip with the kids and shows you the possibilities. Onward....Have a nice weekend and try to stay dry! CB

Dr. Beal!!!! How sweet are you?!? I wanted to get a chance to talk to you as well...but yea, I was completely surrounded by professionals. Thank you SO much for your confidence in me...it's inspiring to know that there are others out there who are just as eager to impact as many lives as possible and what a more perfect way to do this than through Middle school? I'm having a wonderful time at AMS...I took my first field trip on Monday and it was great! It was exhausting...but in a good way; I never realized how much energy it took just to execute a field trip since I was always on the other end as a student :-) I will definitely keep you posted on how things are going. Hope you're feeling better and that your laryngitis has cleared up...but of course, nothing has ever stopped you before :-)

Since you were surrounded by professionals at the Cooperating teacher meeting I could not make a comment about how smashing you looked. You always dressed "pofessionally" for class, but this new you is a more polished and professional, with an "I'm ready to take on the world" confidence and it looks great on you. I am so proud of the young woman you have become. You are "a woman of substance" and make us all so proud to know you represent NCSU and MSL. Onward! You are going to have a semester to remember at Apex. Jerry is THE BEST! Keep me posted. I have things that can be borrowed to use, if needed. Lots of China and Asia stuff that might be useful. CB

I can't believe you took the time to write such a kind, touching message to me, Candy. I'm grateful for your wisdom and partnership in all the work we've done together in our years as colleagues. No one is a better judge and advocate for adolescents and their teachers than you!!! Thank you for sharing your deep knowledge with our students and teachers!

Hi Candy! I hope you are having a great semester.

We love Marbles. When they redid the upstairs, I joined - they have an Olympic theme and a building/construction theme. My kids beg to go there.

Profile Information

About Me:
Candy Beal, Associate Professor, Curriculum and Integration

1. My interests lie in curriculum development as it is appropriate for middle school students. This is not always subject specific although my background and early work is in social studies. I also work in global education, specifically the structure and organization of Russian education and the contributions of Russian educators. In addition I seek to explore the value middle school students serve as teachers for teacher education students.
. Currently much of my work is linked with that of Dr. Carol Pope and Dr. Lodge McCammon as we continue to develop and research The Outsiders Project (TOP). This project looks at middle schoolers as partners and teachers in the development of our teacher education students. TOP is going into its 4th year of implementation and we are currently in the writing phase as well as altering year number four’s implementation to probe more deeply into how the message of the book The Outsiders resonates with early adolescents. The project is technology rich and also explores the power of technology in teaching early adolescents. In addition, the project looks at development theories as they are evident in the participants and how the characteristics of these theories influence teaching and learning choices.

I continue to travel to Russia and work with Russian teachers as well as work in the local schools with portions of the North Carolina Sixth Grades Go to Russia project. Sixth grade teachers use that project (implemented with 5,000 NC students and their teachers as well as with students and teachers on three continents) when they teach Russia. My work is linked to Dr. Lois Holcomb’s Web 2.0 work as we develop an interactive Google Earth project that weaves student choice and interactivity with Piaget’s concrete to abstract learning through James Beane’s curriculum integration approach.

My greatest joy is teaching ECI 309 and ECI 550, both foundations classes in middle level education. ECI 551 will be taught in the spring using a new format, one that will utilize a great deal of field experiences, all in an effort to return joy and innovation to curriculum development and support curriculum integration in the classroom.

My current service activities involve working with local schools and my professional development is focused on in depth reading in my field and publications. The fifth edition of the Beal, Bolick, Martorella methods social studies text has been completed and is in publication.

Great Adventure mullings

3. Blog idea: This idea involves development theory (Erikson, in particular), early adolescent development, development of teacher educators and The Outsiders Project. I am working with the idea that ms students, themselves in the identity development stage of epigenesis, also are in generativity. They are giving back to the teacher educators what good teachers have given them over their short years. In addition, they are lending their knowledge about how they learn and interact in an effort to… Continue
