Profile Information

About Me:
I appreciate being a counselor educator very much. Teaching subjects that I enjoy and about which I have significant expertise is very rewarding. Witnessing the professional and scholarly development of students in our school counseling master’s degree program and our counselor education doctoral program whom I have opportunities to mentor is also very rewarding. Communicating with professional colleagues in our program and across the counseling profession is enlightening and invigorating. This makes attendance at professional conferences especially meaningful. Being a member of the faculty of a university and a college of education provides an excellent working environment for me. The exchange of ideas and information in this environment is exciting, and the advantages of academic freedom are especially meaningful. My enthusiasm for this profession is increasing with age and experience. I am continuously experiencing new and important insights that keep me young in mind and soul.

Brief statement about the current work of Stan Baker

Over a period of two years, I will teach the research design, professional issues, and advanced assessment courses in the Counselor Education doctoral program, and I teach the introduction to school counseling and supervise the school counseling interns on a yearly basis in the master’s degree program. My writing and research interests include enhancement of the school counseling profession, acquisition of knowledge about the counseling practicum supervision process, methods of achieving accountability for professional school counselors, and the discovery of best methods of research and assessment in the counselor education and professional counseling professions. In addition, I devote considerable scholarly time to helping doctoral students publish their dissertation research and other scholarly manuscripts.

Current Activities

During the fall semester I am teaching the master's level introduction to school counseling course and the doctoral level professional issues course. My writing activities are primarily focused on helping former doctoral students publish their dissertation research. In October, I will present a program about new accountability strategies for counselors at the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Conference in Houston. In November, I will be presenting a program on the relationship between school counselor consultation and advocacy, leadership and collaboration functions at the North Carolina School Counselor Association conference in Greensboro with four former students: Victoria Dietrich, Tracie Robichaud, Rachel Schreck, and Stacy Wells.
