I have had the privilege to go to several different exhibits of Picasso’s work. I say privilege not because of my sheer enjoyment of his work, because I generally do not care for much of Picasso’s work, but just because Picasso was extremely talente…

The Court of North Carolina lends itself to being a place for democratic space. The idea that it is one of the only areas on North Campus that has such an opening and inviting feel draws people to it. On warm, sunny days you always see people sittin…

I must say that I am intrigued to read Tony Horwitz’s book. The review makes it seem like quite an interesting read. Thinking back about the different topics that he addresses in his book, I even realized that my knowledge of these events is limited…

Technology is changing that way that history is presented. With the ability to make history interactive like it has never been before you are able to engage many more people. With the expanding use of online digital collections more and more people…

As a student I never liked the essay. They always seemed like busy work to me. But that was from the perspective of someone who would have rather been doing just about anything else that get the essay done. Now that I am more informed and much wiser…

I like your choice here, in showing segregation/discrimination through the use of this movie. Not only is it entertaining, but there are a number of overt and subtle signs of discrimination, something which many students will slowly lose sight of ov…

This movie is a really great representation of the racial tensions that the youth of America was dealing with in the 1970's. There is a part when the boys are refused service at a diner because some of them are African American. There is a part when…

There are few movies I like better than ones about historical events or sports. What could be better than combining the two? When using something like sports to play out a historical event you give people the common bond to the story that they might…

The excitement use to be palpable in the room when the class realized we were going to watch a movie instead of needing to sit there taking notes. A movie would seem like several periods, sometimes, of material that was not going to be tested so who…

In reviewing the various posts, I have noticed a couple of trends. Some articles are like yours- the posts start small and seemingly insignificant. From there, they build momentum to become higher profile pieces. Other articles appear in a initial h…

Imagine risking everything that is important to you for a cause you believe in. Try to think of how it would feel too literally risk everything that you have worked for, your family and even your life for that cause. Could you do it? The 56 men th…

It's been real.. It's been fun.. It's been real fun...

Reaching the end of the course, August seems so long ago now that it is December. We have covered a lot of important topics since the first class that have all worked together and grown on each other. One of the themes that seemed to play an important role throughout the semester was the idea of 21t Century Skills and how they will be incorporated in to the classroom. As you look through the following posts I hope that you see how the use of these skills will be important to the future teacher.… Continue

The American Revolution should never be a Tangent in History

Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian communications theorist and educator, said, “American youth attributes much more importance to arriving at driver's license age than at voting age.” Though a true but startling fact to the historian and political scientist in me, I always wonder when this change in importance came about. Basic concepts in American History show us that millions of men and women have fought and died for this right to vote that now seems to be a second thought to the youth of America. T… Continue

Picasso is not always my favorite...

I have had the privilege to go to several different exhibits of Picasso’s work. I say privilege not because of my sheer enjoyment of his work, because I generally do not care for much of Picasso’s work, but just because Picasso was extremely talented and had an immeasurable effect on the world of art. Anyone who appreciates art must respect this aspect of Picasso even if they do not like his work. Though I always find myself jaded when looking at Picasso’s work because of my dislike of it the ex… Continue

Looking through a Voyage Long and Strange

Looking at Chapter 13 in Tony Horwitz’s book, A Voyage Long and Strange, about the Colonization of Plymouth, Ma, I applied his point of view on two different images depiction the time period. I then applied this some technique to the same images using two other works of literature. The first is American History by Marcius Willson (1847) and the second An American History written by David Saville Muzzey (1920).
