The Court of North Carolina lends itself to being a place for democratic space. The idea that it is one of the only areas on North Campus that has such an opening and inviting feel draws people to it. On warm, sunny days you always see people sitt...

I must say that I am intrigued to read Tony Horwitz’s book. The review makes it seem like quite an interesting read. Thinking back about the different topics that he addresses in his book, I even realized that my knowledge of these events is limit...

As a student I never liked the essay. They always seemed like busy work to me. But that was from the perspective of someone who would have rather been doing just about anything else that get the essay done. Now that I am more informed and much wis...

I like your choice here, in showing segregation/discrimination through the use of this movie. Not only is it entertaining, but there are a number of overt and subtle signs of discrimination, something which many students will slowly lose sight of ...

This movie is a really great representation of the racial tensions that the youth of America was dealing with in the 1970's. There is a part when the boys are refused service at a diner because some of them are African American. There is a part wh...

There are few movies I like better than ones about historical events or sports. What could be better than combining the two? When using something like sports to play out a historical event you give people the common bond to the story that they mig...

The excitement use to be palpable in the room when the class realized we were going to watch a movie instead of needing to sit there taking notes. A movie would seem like several periods, sometimes, of material that was not going to be tested so w...

In reviewing the various posts, I have noticed a couple of trends. Some articles are like yours- the posts start small and seemingly insignificant. From there, they build momentum to become higher profile pieces. Other articles appear in a initial...

Imagine risking everything that is important to you for a cause you believe in. Try to think of how it would feel too literally risk everything that you have worked for, your family and even your life for that cause. Could you do it? The 56 men ...

The massive array of information is truly amazing. Just to give you a sense, here is a quote from a study that was done a couple of years ago. "In an attempt to quantify the volume, the researchers suggest defining a byte of digital data as one c...

I know that it's in keeping with the facts, but I also think it's notable how the artist contrasts the relative heights of Lincoln and McClellan. On the left, Lincoln is taller than the man (a freed slave?) whose hand he is shaking. He looks autho...

Looking through a Voyage Long and Strange

Looking at Chapter 13 in Tony Horwitz’s book, A Voyage Long and Strange, about the Colonization of Plymouth, Ma, I applied his point of view on two different images depiction the time period. I then applied this some technique to the same images using two other works of literature. The first is American History by Marcius Willson (1847) and the second An American History written by David Saville Muzzey (1920).

Designs for Democracy

I had never really taken a look at the different online collections of data that are available to people. I was the kind of person that just basically Google –d what I needed and moved on from there. Through the various assignments through class I have been exposed to many that I might not have other wised looked at. Designs for Democracy is probably my favorite of all the ones that I have looked at. The collection houses some extremely interesting information that I might not have even known ex… Continue
