This is another good way to make art history lessons potentially far more interesting. I think students would much rather tour architectural masterpieces online than look at pictures in the book. It would be nice to then have them design buildings i…

This article reminded me of a few years ago, when I taught at a small charter school with NO budget for textbooks, and I got an email from a very confused parent of a student in my homeroom. Her son had been assigned to do a research project on Zair…

I certainly plan to use it when applicable. It can allow the students to make real world connections right then and there! It is amazing.

I agree with you. Cost will always be a factor in the public school system. When there are free opportunities awaiting, we must be proactive and take the opportunity to offer more engaging lessons to our students by utilizing these technologies!

The articles this week provided a lot of useful information for educators. I think that when students think "Geography", they zone in on a "map reading class." I would have to say that Geography has always been important, but today I think that toda…

I really like the point Kenreich makes in his article about getting past this mundane notion of place-name location and about redefining the word map. The traditional idea of a map, in my mind at least, is a two-dimensional representation showing na…

I agree with you and Michael, History and culture certainly parallel literature, or help explain literature and should be taught concurrently to contextualize events and major works. Google Earth lends itself to this and is a valuable tool for all t…

Profile Information

About Me:
I am an assistant professor of Instructional Technology in the Curriculum and Instruction Program. This is my fourth year at NC State and I enjoy being part of such a collaborative team of colleagues.

I am interested in examining how technology can be utilized to enhance teaching and learning, especially as it related to 21st century skills. In particular, I am interested in identifying and examining the impact a 1:1 laptop initiative on student achievement. I am also interested in utilizing Web 2.0 technologies to enhance learning, especially in the distance education. From one to one learning, to Web 2.0 technologies to distance education, I aim to merge my teaching with my research.

Currently

I am currently working with the evaluation team on the 1:1 Evaluation Project. My primary responsibility focuses on the scholarly dissemination of research relating to the project. I am also working with Dr. Candy Beal on the development of a Web 2.0 project within the social students context. As part of this project, Dr. Beal and I are developing an interactive map to be utilized in a problem-based learning environment. I am also part of a collaboration examining the development, design, and functionality of classroom web sits. As part of this research project, we are not only identifying core elements of classroom web sites, we are also tracking and analyzing the evolution of classroom web sites over the past ten years.

I am presently teaching Multimedia Applications and a special topics course on 21st Century Technology Skills. As part of the Multimedia Applications course, students explore and evaluate various types of instructional software, instructional design principals, and multimedia authoring tools. The 21st Century Technology Skills course explores and identifies the skills, technologies, and tools that are key components of the 21st century and how they pertain to teaching and learning.
