While I think the Court of the Carolinas has the potential to be used for democratic life, I believe it was designed with a different purpose in mind, that of the mental health and wellness of the students. Or at least, that's how I see it because t…

While I admit, many myths about early America have been debunked and proven false by scholars and historians, I find it unusual that Ferguson feels Horwitz is going over old territory. For most Americans, it's completely new information, which they…

I like your choice here, in showing segregation/discrimination through the use of this movie. Not only is it entertaining, but there are a number of overt and subtle signs of discrimination, something which many students will slowly lose sight of ov…

While I'm not surprised in the least that films such as Glory and Amistad were among the most used, I am a bit shocked at the numbers. I don't think I ever had a history teacher who used a portion of a film a week. MAYBE once every two weeks, but ne…

To my knowledge, I thought he was the son of a diplomat. A privileged position, but not of noble status I thought. If it does mean he was nobility, I'm assuming he'd have of been of minor noble status. But either way, a "dark horse" no one could hav…

Great - I really like tone of your post. It has that edge of your seat feel to it, while also encouraging us to engage French history and the rise of Napoleon. The grand sweep of history across the bottom of the page with the inscriptions of Hanniba…

Probably due to another course I'm enrolled in, but a passage within "Rereading the Indian in Benjamin West's Death of General Wolfe" struck me, and I felt I should just share my thoughts on the matter. "The [Indian's] placement on the ground and h…

I have a hard time buying this picture. I see it as all blatantly false propaganda. McCellan was a pro-war democrat, so it's hard for me to believe he'd have agreed to any peace between the North and South, despite his parties stance. Once he was pr…

It's no surprise many people wanted to push out Lincoln in 1864, especially since the war still wasn't over. It was much like the election of 2004 I suppose, with Afghanistan and Iraq still going on. But the both Lincoln and Bush had such powerful m…

Seeing this image, it makes me think the artist was a northerner in opposition to Lincoln's leadership. A bird, especially the one depicted, isn't very threatening when compared to a man with a gun, so I'd say he doesn't have any allegiance to the C…

Something that I find interesting about this cartoon that is not really mentioned in the reading are all the little symbolic pieces scattered throughout. Some examples are the confederate prisons in the background, Davis is wearing a skirt holding a…

There were many people that would have liked to see Jefferson Davis and other conspirators hung for their actions at the end of the War. The image does an excellent job of showing the good v. evil dichotomy that was prevalent at this time in America…

Mythtacular

While I admit, many myths about early America have been debunked and proven false by scholars and historians, I find it unusual that Ferguson feels Horwitz is going over old territory. For most Americans, it's completely new information, which they haven't ever heard before. In Hollywood films of old, and new, scalping is a distinctly Native American activity. It fits in with their typically shown savage nature. Where in reality their tactics and actions were normal and familiar to their brethre… Continue

Down the Sights

The United States was plunged into World War II and out of the Great Depression by the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. With over 3,600 casualties, it is one of the more prominent American memories. Mostly because it was so overwhelmingly devastating and sudden, but also because it propelled this country to the position it sits today. It became a matter of great national and familial pride to enlist on a scale unlike previously. Women entered the work place by the droves, and rationing and victo… Continue

Historical Representation

While I'm not surprised in the least that films such as Glory and Amistad were among the most used, I am a bit shocked at the numbers. I don't think I ever had a history teacher who used a portion of a film a week. MAYBE once every two weeks, but never every week. The films were used as rewards for finishing a section, or as icing on the cake at the end of the year. A few of the films were actually used to lead into course work, but then there were also the times we watched a film… Continue

Plantations of the past

Slave holders are often villianized in movies and in recreations of the past, today. Slaves are beaten, sold, families separated, and the white man continues to make money off the backs of other people's suffering and hard labor. We often forget that these slave holders are people too. They are flesh and blood, and have emotions, and ties to other people, just as we do today. The letters on display offered by plantationletters.com show this side of them. It would be difficult to discern the diff… Continue

Collections Galore!

The Built Heritage of North Carolina
http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/specialcollections/builtheritage/index.php

The layout for this collection is simple enough. It's opening page has an introduction, explaining what the collection is for, and has a list of links within the site for navigational purposes. The primary links used in this site I would are 'search', 'browse', and 'timelines'. The link titled 'maps' works, but the actually page isn't completed yet, so is therefore useless at the moment. If y… Continue
