My favorite thing about the Google Earth app is that it is green and no way for any of us to leave our carbon footprints. Students can study history, look at Europe prior to WWII, see the devastation during WWII and then look how it is revitalized t…
Tawnee is so right. Memorization and map reading is not meaningful when done in isolation. When you get to read about the history of a foreign land or even fiction with a foreign setting, that is the time to connect to the geography to have a deeper…
Teachers can and should work together since the use of these technologies requires the use of more than one curriculum subject. This would make it easier for teachers to learn the technologies and then incorporate them into their lessons.
As Rachael suggests, teachers can integrate between curriculums to make connections between trends and geographic locations using the combination of GPS and GIS. The GPS helps students with the coordinates, and it sounds like the GIS allows them to…
I don't think Geography needs to be taught in isolation either. It is kind of like 'vocabulary' for English teachers. When you teach Geography as part of a bigger unit, it has more meaning. I also don't believe SS teachers are the only ones who need…
To begin with as a teacher of literature, I feel it is extremely important for students to understand the geography and time period as it relates to the setting of literature, as it relates to influences it may have on the author, and so that studen…
I want to create my own eportfolio. I could see teachers using them as "good examples" when trying to explain a project we want our students to create. We could also save some of our best students' work in our eportfolio, being mindful to give the s…
Dr. Hellen Barrett suggested that the eportfolios all be stored online. That too can be costly. I have been using free web 2.0 tools so far. I know that I am going to have to break down and purchase my own domain though - soon.
Streaming video will enhance education. Instead of merely reading about facts, events, animals, and other things that are not within the daily view of our students, students will have the video opportunity to witness events up close and personal. It…
I can't picture a full-time future using video conferencing in education. However, I have seen trends heading in this direction. When I left the state of Texas in 2007, my local high school began to offer summer classes online. These were NOT remedi…
Virtual Conferences are designed just like professional conferencing but they include technology, making conferencing accessible by people who are in varying locations all over the world. The most defining aspect seems to be “high levels of interper…
One advantage, however, is if you dislike the student. You can set personal judgements apart more easily when you, the instructor, are working from a distant location. For example, when I grade language arts essays, I always require students to put…
I am a Language Arts teacher at Centennial Middle School; our building is attached to the Friday Institute. I have been married for 21 years, have a son attending Texas A&M University and a second son in 8th grade at Centennial. I have two adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that get nearly as much attention from me as my students:)

Hi Kristy,
I don't know why I didn't see your comment til now . . sorry!
I'm at Davis Drive Middle in Cary. We are actually sort of short on computers, and certainly don't have laptops floating around for an entire grade level. The wealth is not evenly distributed, but I guess personal initiative can play a role in that-- people write grant proposals, apply to Donor Choose, etc. I need to tap into that stuff!
