This is another good way to make art history lessons potentially far more interesting. I think students would much rather tour architectural masterpieces online than look at pictures in the book. It would be nice to then have them design buildings i…
This article reminded me of a few years ago, when I taught at a small charter school with NO budget for textbooks, and I got an email from a very confused parent of a student in my homeroom. Her son had been assigned to do a research project on Zair…
What do you see as potential benefits of using eportfolios for students?
1. Portfolios are a great way for students to see themselves progress over time. The portfolio makes them more sensitive to the time frame of a grading period, and maybe more…

This is a nice, quick introduction to streaming video. I wish that my media specialists had shown this the first time they presented on what was available at our school. I eventually figured it o…
I'm about halfway through The World is Flat and (not to spoil it for anybody!) it's clear that virtual meetings already have redefined the way business is conducted. This is trickling down to education. I have experienced this in 2 ways: 1) PLTs (Pr…
I have taken several online courses, and each has been both challenging and successful. Course organization and quick feedback have been keys to it going well, and the biggest challenge has been keeping track of everything that's expected of me. I k…
Yes, balance is the key to making either work. Teaching full time, taking graduate classes, and maintaining a home, family, and a bit of an outside life-- that's a big load. Empowering students to juggle their responsibilities as individual situatio…
I agree about the differences in the experience of attending a class in person (body language, inflections, etc.) vs. online (I like 'flat'). I feel like, while it is always a valuable and reinforcing thing to post responses to others' comments, I a…
I am also skeptical about using online instruction with younger students for 2 major reasons. First is the personal responsibility factor that Katrina mentioned. Even many high school seniors (and many undergraduates as well) are used to being spoon…
Yes, I checked with her-- we are actually teachers. It said students somewhere. I'm going to delete this group and post everything on the discussion forum from here on out!
I really don't know how to link it, but I will be happy to discuss it there also. I think 2 to 2 would be good also. Have you two chosen to be proponents of it or opponents? I am a proponent...provided the information that we have been given. Howeve…
This activity was so fascinating. Google is my homepage. My only experiences with alternatives have been when I've inadvertently added something like an Ask or Yahoo toolbar, only to get irritated with the inferiority and waste of time & effort to r…
Hi Jenny. Wow, I am surprised at Davis Drive's computer shortage. I live near there; my son would go to Salem if he weren't at Centennial.
The thing is, when do you have time to write grants? Plus, why should you have to? I would think Dr. Goodnight would want to take care of his Cary schools since SAS is in Cary. But we are talking about a Wake County School - pretty big district. Do you think things would be different if Cary and Apex broke off and became independent schools? Have you seen Southeast Raleigh High School's technology? Mac labs (more than one) and they have nicer broadcasting equipment than WRAL - I am not eggagerating either.
Which middle school are you teaching at? We have 1:1 laptops and LCD projectors in our rooms at Centennial - at the 8th grade level only. SAS is working with us and piloting their Curriculum Pathways online software for MS through one 7th grade class this year. I think the 7th grade will have the 1:1 laptops soon as well.
The Friday Institute hosted speakers from Maine, where there is a 1:1 laptop program throughout the entire state (beginning with 7th grade). The lack of equity throughout Wake Co. is mind boggling to me.
