Professional: I have been teaching since 1994 - I profess myself to be a teacher of English, so hold on while I do the math on that...11years in the classroom (taught Spanish, ESL, Freshmen Comp., and English 9-12), and 3 years as a coach (writing, instructional, and academic). This is my 15th year in education - woohoo -made it to the halfway point...only 15 more to go! In 2001, I received National Board Certification. I also serve as the Associate Director/K-12 Liaison for the Tar River Writing Project at East Carolina University, check it out at www.trwp.org. I dream of a school, an entire school, committed to the pedagogy of writing to learn, where faculty, staff, and students identify themselves as writers and establish community around that identity. And, I believe, that EVERY student can be a writer. (Yes, I intentionally used a sentence fragment - that's the cool thing about knowing the intricacies of the English language...you can break the rules on purpose for effect! The cool thing about technology, especially Web 2.0 tools like Ning, is that participants become writers even if they don't realize they have!) :-)
Personal: My daughter, Scarlett, is 13 (in 8th grade), and my son, Langley, is 9 (in 4th grade). I still can't believe my girl is just 10 short months away from being in high school! Both my children play challenge soccer, which means we are on the road a lot! But, it's fun, and we get to see parts of NC we have never seen before. Road trips can be great bonding experiences. :-)
