Fall 2009

For the past year, I’ve been collaborating with James Lester in Computer Science to conduct research in the area of game-based literacies and learning on the NSF funded project, Crystal Island. As a Sr. Research Fellow at the Friday Institute, I’m providing leadership for the FI's New Literacies Collaborative (NLC). As part of my work with the NLC, I've created the Cinéma Veritéen project which is an inquiry project-based learning approach to help students with online research culminating in a video product. I’m using the same inquiry project-based learning approach and the Mishra and Koehler’s TPCK model with inservice teachers. I’ve also been conducting research in new literacies with US and Chinese teachers. I'm having fun. . .

If you have any ideas on this approach please shar… Continue

Hey Back!

So far, so good!

Your class sounds so interesting! I would love to hear more about it. I'm starting to think about a research study based on Don Leu's work - only I would work with elementary students. I'd love to talk with you about it. His speech really got me thinking about expanding the way we look at reading and texts...

You are welcome, Hillar. I could tell that you were very much involved and knew what you were doing. That you are having fun is an excellent bonus and should lead to further accomplishments in this domain.

Thank you for the presentation about your research this past Friday. I was very much impressed with the complexity of the study, the sophistication of the research design, and the importance of the work. Your efforts enhance your reputation as a scholar and all of us as members of the College of Education.
