Hi, Heather..
I'll look forward to meeting you Face2Face soon! I'm in the office next to you, so we'll be seeing quite a bit of each other. Welcome to NC State and to the 4th floor suite. We have a good, convivial group...share lots of laughs and challenges.

I noted with interest your research pursuits...I actually did my own dr. diss. on the student teacher/cooperating teacher educational beliefs/philosophies...some years ago. :-) I'm bewitched by your focus on emotion regulation and will look forward to talking about that sometime.

Glad to have you in the WolfPack Family!!!! It's a great place to be and live.

This photo was taken of me at my last dinner with my MA/PhD students (minus one) before we left Columbus. Here I am doing my very best *Vanna* impression!

Profile Information

About Me:
I am an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction. Trained as an educational psychologist, my teaching interests surround helping teachers use theories of development to meet their students' needs. I also enjoy teaching research seminars in the interpersonal contexts (teacher & peer relationships) and emotional context of the classroom and courses in teacher education (i.e. field experience/ supervision and professional development). My primary goal as a teacher is to develop a classroom context that facilitates students' mastery of course content as well as the strategies and skills they need for life-long learning.

My research interests follow three threads: examining developmental differences/changes in children's relationships with their teachers, understanding the ways in which students and teachers regulate their emotions, and exploring the enactment of pre-service and practicing teachers' beliefs. Last year, I felt so proud of the work I published in part because two of the pieces were published in conjunction with my doctoral students and in part because the each of the pieces I used employed really exciting, new ways of exploring relationships from both children's and teacher's perspectives.

Generations of Mentoring

Life as a faculty member is often hard to describe... On the one hand you have your biological family who you love despite the fact that you may or may not share anything in common with them. Then, there is your academic family - the sisters you went to school with, the parents who mentored you, and relatives spread across the country that you can't wait to see each conference. This summer I reunited with my sisters and mom for tea at the Royal Fairmont York Hotel in Toronto. We were all attending the American Psychological Association and we got together to talk about our work and mentor each other. We share everything in common, but biology, and there is much love. Together we are about to embark on a journey to write an inter-generational book on mentoring scholars. (Missing from this photo is my sister Dr. Jessia DeCuir-Gunby and our academic dad, Dr. Paul Schutz).

Not surprisingly, developing and maintaining relationships with my own students is really important to me. Here is a photo of my OSU family (minus one who graduated and moved on). Since this photo was taken, I have seen four more graduate and go on to become faculty at Auburn, Strayer, and Emory Universities and Directors of Research for KidsOhio.org and the See Forever Foundation. I believe strongly that for students to be successful in conducting and producing research they need opportunities to actively participate in the process (from start to finish), generous amounts of constructive feedback, and opportunities to celebrate their accomplishments.

Joining the Wolfpack Family...

... we are so excited to be joining the Wolfpack family. After several years of living apart (even while trying to raise Hannah!) and a couple of challenging years of *transition* at OSU, this move to NCSU brings the potential for Craig and I to balance our passion for work with our dedication to family. NCSU will be my third position and so I've decided to dedicate this blog to describing our experiences joining the family.

There are so many places I could begin, but I thought I would begin wi… Continue
