The problem with designing democratic space is the need to fuse utility functions with social functions. Most communal space is clustered around entrances to buildings. The entrance to Leazar Hall is one of these spaces that has specific design feat…

The two films you chose take the perspective of the oppressed or marginalized population. This is a departure from most Hollywood films which represent the heroes point of view for an American audience. We love an underdog story as any film about th…

During the summer I went to see District 9. It was billed as a visionary telling of institutional, state-sanctioned racism, deliberately set in South Africa and drawing on the legacy of Apartheid. The catch is that it tells a story of aliens from ou…

I liked what you said about the plantation newscast and the freedoms it allows students to have in their approach to learning. I found myself wondering the same things you did in regards to the sequencing of the SCIM-C scaffold. I found myself leani…

This is very consistent with the Shackleton–Rowett Expedition Wikipedia page, because of the crossover between similar content articles and the editors. The same five editors with 20 or so edits were also the contributors on the expedition page. The…

Very nicely done. I particularly like your venture into French political history and the depiction of the noble émigré captain. The positioning of this painting as a metaphor for the larger upheaval that shaped France in the early 19th century is al…

The Picasso approach

Picasso and the Allure of Language, currently at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, is a collection that demonstrates that there are many ways of encountering the same material. By by merely comparing notes with others who visited the exhibit it is evident that there are many ways to experience the paintings. I chose to follow the audio guide while my girlfriend wandered through the exhibit before even turning on the guide. As a result we felt and thought differently as we explored the… Continue

Where are the people in Designs for Democracy?

and I'm not talking about the archivists...

One thing the site Designs for Democracy tells you is just how involved the federal government has been in American life since it’s founding. The images depicting patents for spoons is an example of this reach. That said, I don’t quite understand the title of the resource “Designs for Democracy”. Admittedly this title has more “pop” compared to “flyers for the fed” or “sketches for the state”. My point is that none of these images tells us anything ab… Continue

Sickness and Health as Resistance to the Plantation System

In any relationship of power, there is resistance. One of the major trends in history in the later half of the 20th century was locating and valuing resistance to power. Guilds, factories, armies, colonies, and every other organized structure for exerting power faced resistance to power. The most successful organizations designed outlets for this resistance that did not challenge the status quo, but provided the oppressed an opportunity for relief. Whether through legal rights, customs, or tacit… Continue

Bombers, Self-representation, and Meaning

In recent years I have come to realize that students need more help understanding the violence they see on television news and read about in short online articles. September 11, the renewed Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and two wars involving Americans necessitate understanding and explanation. Yet the general public receives very little of this in the media beyond troop levels and casualty reports. This lack of information is aided by a centuries old trope that the Middle East is unknowable, my… Continue
