- About Me:
- Hi, I'm Charley Norkus, a Social Studies Teacher at Athens Dr High School. I was born and raised in Raleigh and graduated from State in 1976, BA in History with a concentration in Ancient Greece & Rome. Since that time, I've taught on and off in Wake County for 16 years and also had some pretty interesting experiences in the private sector. I left the classroom in '98 and worked for SAS from '99-07, mostly as a sales rep for Curriculum Pathways, an awesome on-line high school instructional resource. I'd been thinking about returning to teaching for several years; finally, I took a terminating position at Garner High the Spring of 08 just to see. The teachers and administration there were so dedicated, encouraging, and supportive that they made it easy for me to want to come back (great school if you're looking for a place to teach).
I've now completed five courses in pursuit of a M.Ed in New Literacies and Global Learning. I am excited to be back "in the trenches" as both a student at State and a teacher at Athens Drive (another great place to work), and I am looking forward to enriching my own classroom with what I learn through this program.

What about our own textbooks?
The more I read Werner, the more curious I became about our own US History textbook here at Athens. So many new ideas...
I could use some kind of "cheat-sheet" for all of the different 21st century technology tools and skills we have been exposed to this semester. Has anyone created such a page that lists perhaps the titles, URLs and a brief summary of each? I've taken my high school students to the lab for projects, and it's been easy for them to fall back on creating PowerPoints, but any time I've introduced a new idea, many of them have jumped on it. - Me too, Jane!!! Of course I remember you guys - hope brother Joe is doing all right. What did you teach? (probably told us in your introd) I'm teaching US History and Recent International Relations, both for the first time, so I'm going a little crazy. Also writing a course on understanding Catholicism for the evangelical church I go to with Becky that is due mid-Oct, and THIS course is knocking me for a loop too, so yeh, I'm a little frazzled.
Eddie Gray and Dr Brodie and Ms Vaughn and Louisa King are all still there and probably others in the dept that you know - I really miss the whole group - they have a really good thing going there. Folks at Athens have also been very nice; I just need about 10 days in the week - 3 more that nobody else knows about - so I can catch up. Take care - Charley

- It's a small world, Charley! You and I grew up on the same street. Do you remember the Crutchfield family? My mother and your father worked together too! And get this...I am retired from teaching and spent the last 18 years of teaching at Garner High School. So tell me...what do you teach? I bet I know most of your colleagues!
