About Me:
1. My professional interests have always focused on the preparation of superb Middle Grades English Language Arts teachers. In that context, I have written and researched such issues as technology integration in ELA teacher preparation and the importance of taking reflection to the next stage—i.e., refraction. In refraction a teacher not only looks at “self,” but also considers in that mirror the students with whom they work in order to make pedagogical decisions. The next step in my line of inquiry has focused on the power of middle school students as co-teacher educators in developing the next generation of middle school teachers.

Besides my professional interests, I have been a long-time member of the WolfPack family. From the time I taught high school English at Broughton High School, I have been an NC State supporter. I also served on the NC State
Faculty Athletic Council and chaired a review of the Academic Skills Program. I did my master’s degree in English at NC State before moving to the University of Virginia to complete my doctoral degree in English Education with a minor in supervision.

One of my favorite pastimes, besides supporting the WolfPack, is ballroom
dancing. My spouse and I have been taking lessons for some time—just for
fun and enjoyment. We aren’t great, but we have a good time together stretching
our academic selves in a physical way

Currently

My most important current work focuses on the impact of middle grades students
as teacher educators. In my ECI 307 Teaching Writing Across the Curriculum,
I invite CCMS middle school students and their teachers into our Discovery
Classroom in the Friday Institute where they become WolfPack Writing Partners
with my students who will soon become middle school teachers of writing.
Together we learn about writing, digital writing, collaborative writing, and
the art of teaching and writing. Our culminating project includes collaborative
poetry writing, crafting and publishing—in the form of a WPWPoets digital
performance of poetry readings.

A collaborative program with Drs. Candy Beal and Lodge McCammon which enhances this study of Middle schoolers as teacher educators in The Outsiders Project (TOP). In this joint program of Dr.Beal’s juniors in ECI 309 and my ECI 405 Literature for Adolescents, we focus on teaching young adult literature and
recognizing middle grades students’ developmental characteristics in a five-week
project with a 7th grade team of CCMS students and teachers. We have presented
numerous times on this project, won a University award, and written articles for
publication.

These partnership projects with CCMS build on my role as both the CED liaison to the school and director of the Middle Grades Academy.

I also teach a course in Teachers as Leaders—a passion of mine which coalesces with my role as a partner in the NC Quest: Voices of NC project (a professional
Development experience for 8th grade teachers regarding integration of the
Voices of NC curriculum (by Wolfram and Reaser) into SS and LA. Drs. Carl
Young and Jeffrey Reaser serve as co-PIs for this project, which also includes
Drs. Candy Beal, John Lee, and Walt Wolfram.

Modesty becomes you but you are a fabulous dancer, as talent second only to your lifelong work in education. You have been a gift to me since my doctoral years and I value our work together. While I jokingly call you The Pope, I mean it sincerely as a tip of the hat to the finest teacher and leader of young adults I know. Onward to more fabulous Great Adventures, both in Poe and around the world! CB
