In many classes we learn about techniques and different ways to teach our students. In this class we learned “how to” teach our students. This is the only class that I have taken so far, where I got a real “hands on” experience. We had a chance to u…

Since this was a freestyle assignment I sort of took my little tangent. First, I decided to think about a personal interest of mine. Then, I searched for intellectual work referring to my topic/interest. I enjoy watching the FoodNetwork and watching…

For our final project I decided to go to Lake Johnson in Raleigh, NC. I’m an ex-Track and Field athlete and spend a couple of days a month running along the Lake Johnson Trail. The park and lake are beautiful. The picturesque lake is surrounded…

This is a picture of the parking lot right of Leazar Hall. Lauren and I thought this space was a bit restrictive becuase when you get at the top of the space you are blocked by parked cars. Lauren and I thought this would be a good space for a…

I believe there are a lot of uncovered truths in our history (and the history of others). There are always two sides to a story; but what side do we explore? Is it appropriate for us to tell our elementary students the truth about Christopher Columb…

I think the History Engine is a great tool for engaging students into different areas of History. It also eases the load a bit and allows the student to focus on one idea or “episode” in time and create a historical interpretation based on that sing…

***Excuse my notes for this blog. I felt it more appropriate to just write down my thoughts as I was reading, in an attempt to keep my thoughts fresh. I thought it was the best way to get my “unedited” points across in the blog. *** The two history…

After reading Gilbert Ryle's article, twice, I became skeptical of interpretation of know how and know that. His example on pg 2 increased my skepticism of his work. “If no one possessed any money, no one could get any money on loan.” This may be tr…

johnchavisproject.wav I must say this week's reading, with the exception of the Kunhardt article, were a little hard to read through. I agree that Art can be a great way to get students, and people in general for that matter, to think critically a…

It sounds like you'll have some engaging lesson plans, that your students will be able to appreciate. And while I agree that history needs to be more than what we see, I believe focusing on other senses as a central point, it takes away from what a…

I can see how you might be a little skeptical of the readings and how you can easily interpret some of the readings as being economic, social or political history rather than based on sensory skills. I too think that some of the readings may be stre…

My Final Thoughts

In many classes we learn about techniques and different ways to teach our students. In this class we learned “how to” teach our students. This is the only class that I have taken so far, where I got a real “hands on” experience. We had a chance to use our cognitive abilities as well as physically get involved with the activities. I was to able to complete each lesson or assignment and at the same time learn about what obstacles or difficulties my students may have, if I were to present each less… Continue

Social Studies Tangents

Since this was a freestyle assignment I sort of took my little tangent. First, I decided to think about a personal interest of mine. Then, I searched for intellectual work referring to my topic/interest. I enjoy watching the FoodNetwork and watching chefs create different dishes that others can enjoy. Although I love cooking and trying new recipes I don’t know much about the intellectual work that goes along with my interests. After searching through the web I came across two food historians tha… Continue

The Discovery of The Mississippi

We were given two sources and we had to find a third source that had information about a particular topic based on the chapters from Horwitz's A Voyage Long and Strange. The chapter I chose had to do with the discovery of the Mississippi. After reading a few chapters or a summary from each source, we had to give opinions of two photos (one was provided and the other we had to find) based on what we thought the authors would say, given the material we read.

Sources:
Horwitz, Tony.… Continue
