I would like you each to share one educational game with the class and discuss its educational relevance. Provide a description of the game and how it ties into teaching and learning. Also, be sure to discuss how this game has the ability to tie into the goals and mission of the 21st century. If the game you select does not currently align with the 21st century, provide suggestions for modifications/changes that would allow for the game to be tied in with the 21st century.
I was introduced to this game a few weeks ago during a math workshop at our school. During the math workshop, we were learning about the new math curriculum that will be implimented over the next 2 years. I began using The Set Game with my students during free play when it was raining outside. Once I introduced The Set Game to them, they loved it! The rules for the game are students need to make card sets of 3 cards. Each card needs to have a different attribute in order to be a set. Students are required to think out of the box when creating their sets. Now, I was introduced to the game with tangible cards. I found the website that allows students to play the game online. While on the website, my students began exploring the other venues offered - vocabulary practice, word makers, etc.
Since this game is available online or with tangible cards, I have access to using the game in centers, during morning work, extra home practice, inside recess game, and math/language practice. The best thing about this online game is that the students LOVE to play it. They love when they beat the game - little do they know that beating the game forces them to have an open-mind, organize their thoughts, and interpret the sets in a variety of ways. Students can play this game independently, with a small group of students, or with me!
