Connecting to the Future

Kristy Meyrickk

21st Century Technology Group - Online vs. Face to Face

I read the assigned reading for this week and typed up notes as I was reading each article/case study/report. I will respond to Dr. Holcomb's questions here, but I will attach the notes I took about each of the articles as well. I try to type using a different color so it is easier for me to follow. I hope this helps if you choose to review any of my notes and thoughts/opinions.

"The other week we engaged in a virtual conference for our debate on one-to-one computing. Asides from our discussion last week, how many of you have been part of a meeting that has had a virtual component to it? What do you think are the pros of virtual meetings? The cons?" - Dr. Holcomb

I have only participated in one other virtual meeeting before and it was at the university level. The pros of virtual meetings are cost mostly. Virtual meetings can be held anywhere. No one has to fly, pay for hotels, rental cars, meals out, etc. to meet virtually. Another pro would be the availability of having a hard copy or taped copy to refer to.

The cons include arranging the meeting across time zones, language barriers, too many participants unable to communicate affectively (too much horizontal communication), lack of profit opportunity for the speaker, and lack of preparation.

Do you think the use of virtual meetings will redefine the way business is conducted, which in turn will impact education?? We will use Ning for this discussion." - Dr. Holcomb

"Connection: How will distance education impact the 21st century? Will students have a distinct edge in the global market as a result of learning via distance education? What will skills will students need to learn?" - Dr. Holcomb

Distance education is different from Virtual Meetings. I think Distance Education, when prepared properly, will enhance participants' 21st Century skills. Administrators are designing coursework using well-defined instructional methods, consulting designers, and using web-based tools that enhance the interaction, learning, and experiences of the learner. Students who participate in online courses learn more. All of the articles I read this week indicate this point. They also are learning a skill or tool while they are mastering content. This will give students a very distinct edge in the global market. They will be better abled and more experienced when it comes to developing meeting plans and following through with the various components involved in global communication. They will be aware of the shortcomings and avoid making the mistakes others before them have made. Students today have many advantages if they choose to learn in an online, technology filled, web 2.0 environment. I feel more confident and I have only taken one class partially online and am presently taking two fully online.
